[Kinky Review] Bright by Bootychaaain

I had never heard of Bootychaaain or Sickboyrari before listening to their collaborative project, Bright, which was released last month. The two artists have had relatively lowkey careers. If you type in either of their names into Google, you won’t find much blog coverage, you won’t see their names headlining big festivals, just links to their various social media. They’re mysterious.

The luxurious sounds on Bright do not sound like something made by two lowkey artists, but instead by two superstars, or maybe time travelers, sent from the year 3020. It’s fresh. It’s unique. It’s futuristic.

The production on this project is fantastic. Bootychaaain and Sickboyrari tap a handful of different producers to handle the bulk of the project. At first I was weary of how cohesive the sounds would be on the Bright, but my concerns were quickly put to rest. All of the songs blend beautifully together, creating a clear sonic landscape for the vocalists to dance on top of. Whether it’s the bouncy and fun beat .Cvrrvdio provides on “Buss,” the more aggressive and industrial soundscape Jaguarclaw dishes out on “Number 9,” or the distorted synth loops Evilgiane and 4evr create on “Slayin,” every song creates its own unique vibe without disrupting the flow of the project. Throughout the 11 tracks on Bright we’re greeted with recurring sounds that make each song feel familiar without getting repetitive. Sharp, pixelated synths can be found sparkling in the background of the project giving it texture, and making it sound like a Lite Brite.

The true success of Bright comes from Bootychaain and Sickboyrari, who shine lavishly. They manage to fit into every pocket so effortlessly, and so cool that it almost comes across like they’re not even rapping. While I was listening to this project there were times that I honestly forgot I was listening to music. It all sounds so natural. Their true genius though, comes from knowing when exactly to switch it up. On the third track, “Foolery,” right when you start to get comfortable with the sounds on Bright, Bootychaaain changes her entire flow and toys with the tempo. She toes the line of being off beat: perfectly slowing down just enough to make the listener uncomfortable without sounding like she’s dragging.

Bright is unlike anything I’ve ever heard. The way Bootychaaain and Sickboyrari maneuver over the sparkling production feels cool and careless. It’s extravagant while maintaining its accessibility.   Their names might not ping a ton of hits on Google, but that's only temporary. If Bright was any indication, Bootychaaain and Sickboyrari are going to be superstars.
